The tongue is a doorway of life for our body, soul and spirit. Not only is it designed to feed our bodies, it also has the power to nourish our soul and spirit.
James 3: 9-11 - "With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?"
We can speak forth sickness, disease, dissension, and disaster, or we can speak forth healing, harmony, exhortation, and edification.
To change what's coming out of our mouth, we must change what's going into our heart. The Bible says in Proverbs 18:20-21, that words satisfy the mind as much as fruit does the stomach; good talk is as gratifying as a good harvest. Words kill, words give life; they're either poison or fruit - we choose. The mouth is truly amazing!
The words of our mouth tell the temperature of our heart! If your mouth is sick, your heart is sick, and the best medicine is Scripture. Take your medicine - the bible says in Isaiah 50:4 - (The Servant of God says), "The Lord God has given Me the tongue of a disciple and of one who is taught, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary. He wakens Me morning by morning, He wakens My ear to hear as a disciple, as one who is taught".
What do you think would happen if we thought about what we were going to say before we said it? Do you think we might not say some of the things we say?
Over the years of my life I have learned a great deal about gossip, judging, criticism, and faultfinding. For one thing, I have learned that these things are disgusting to God. It disturbs Him that with the same mouth we use to bless and praise Him, we curse and condemn our fellow man, made in His image.
Let's do ourselves a favor and realize that we have a way to go before we become perfect and we need to give other people a break and not be so quick to criticize and condemn them.
